My Take On Pinpointers...Get One!
I've hunted for many years using a technique that probably a lot of you still use today. I would dig a plug, wave the plug under the coil, dig some more, wave the dirt under the coil, stand up and sweep the hole again trying to locate a hard to pinpoint target.
Last year I finally broke down and bought the Garrett Pro-Pointer and what a difference it's made in the recovery process. Now it's as simple as cutting a "D" shaped plug, flipping it up and locate it with the pinpointer. Sometimes it's in the plug, but I love it when it's still a little deeper and right in the center of the hole, because that's a great signal it's an old coin.
I'm very confident using my Fisher F75 and normally can pinpoint within an inch or so from my target but there are some exceptions and that's where the Pro-Pointer makes it so easy.
Sometimes the coin is on edge or there's a screwcap, pulltab or other piece of scrap metal adjacent to the target which can make pinpointing a hassle. Using a pinpointer is a huge advantage in this scenario. I've cut, scratched and dinged my share of coins because of this before I bought the Propointer, but not any more.
Here's a helpful video for de-tuning the pinpointer for hard to locate targets.

The Garrett is light, in fact I still feel the holster to make sure it's still there. It runs forever on one 9 volt battery . I change it midway through the season just because I don't think it can't last any longer. I've only had the dying battery alert once and that was when I kept the battery in to see just how long it would last.
I'm pretty biased towards the Pro-Pointer as you can probably tell by now. It's the only one I've ever owned, but it doesn't matter on the brand, though I would shy away from the cheap models out there.
Whether you find one on Ebay, buy from a local dealer, a forum or your buddy, I'm confident you'll love using one on your next hunt.
